Miss. Home Corporation to Serve as Lead Agency for Housing Programs
Jackson, Miss. (March 13, 2015) –The Mississippi Home Corporation has been designated as the lead agency for federal housing programs administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. This action will result in two bureaus within Mississippi Development Authority that administer housing grants moving to the Mississippi Home Corporation as of July 1, 2015. This move will affect seven employees.
Operating in the Community Services Division at MDA, the Homelessness and Housing bureaus administer the HOME Investment Partnerships Program and the Emergency Solutions Grant Program, which are funded by HUD. The HOME Program offers grants for rehabilitation or reconstruction of homes for eligible low-income residents, down payment assistance for home ownership, and community housing development organizations. Additionally, the Emergency Solutions Grants Program provides prevention, emergency shelter and transitional housing assistance for the state’s homeless population.
“MDA’s Homelessness and Housing bureaus have done a fantastic job over the years helping Mississippians and communities with housing needs all across our state,” said MDA Executive Director Brent Christensen. “This move is not about job-performance, but about consolidating all aspects of housing assistance into one agency to better serve the state’s housing needs. There is a natural connection between these programs and the housing programs provided by Mississippi Home Corporation. I have every confidence that our outstanding employees will do wonderful things with their new colleagues at Mississippi Home Corporation. I thank them for their years of public service.”
“Designating one entity to coordinate all federal housing activities for the state will lead to more efficiency in the delivery of this important assistance and will benefit the state’ residents and communities,” said Miss. Home Corporation Executive Director Scott Spivey. “MDA has been a valued partner for many years, and we welcome the experience and knowledge our new team members will bring to MHC.”
The affected employees will be offered the opportunity to transfer to the Mississippi Home Corporation. MDA will continue to administer the HUD funded Community Development Block Grant Program in the state.
Established by the state Legislature in 1989, MHC’s mission is to enhance Mississippi’s long-term economic viability by financing safe, decent, affordable housing and helping working families build wealth.
