Mississippi Rail Grant Program

Program facts: The program provides grants to public and private railroads to finance railroad projects that promote economic growth and job creation in Mississippi. Eligible projects must identify specific repairs or improvements to a rail line that would make the line more competitive when providing services to industry in Mississippi.

Examples of eligible projects:

  • Expanding and improving rail lines
  • Maintaining rail lines

Overview: The Mississippi Legislature allocated $7.5 million in the 2018 First Extraordinary Legislative Session for the Mississippi Rail Grant Program to provide grants to public and private railroads to finance railroad projects that promote economic growth and job creation in Mississippi.

Eligible Activities: Eligible projects must have a direct connection to economic development or must aid in the creation of new jobs. Eligible projects must identify specific repairs or improvements to a rail line that would make the line more competitive when providing services to industry in Mississippi.

Program Facts: Entities that own or operate a rail line in Mississippi, including regional rail authorities and privately owned rail service providers, may apply for this competitive grant program.

Rail grant funds may be used to expand, improve and maintain rail lines and rail facilities. Up to 10 percent of grant funds may be used for engineering or architectural costs associated with the project. Funds may not be used for working capital, for general expenditures normally covered under an applicant’s general operating budget or for administrative expenses.

This program requires a match of 50 percent from Class 1 railroad applicants and a match of 25 percent from all other eligible applicants.

Applications are currently being accepted for this program. Railroads interested in applying for this program should submit an application in writing to MDA no later than April 5, 2019. More information on how to apply for this program can be found in the program guidelines.
