MDA Awards Grants for Renewable Energy Projects

Jackson, Miss. (May 7, 2010) – In April, the Mississippi Development Authority (MDA) awarded 8 grants in the first round of the Market Transformation and Technology Deployment: Renewable Energy Projects grant program. A part of the State Energy Program (SEP) funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), the Renewable Energy Projects program awarded $2.02 million in grant funding to eight entities throughout the state. Another approximately $3.5 million in grant funding will be awarded in the second round tentatively scheduled for June 2010.

Under the program, eligible public and private entities will be able to purchase and install systems that replace the use of fossil fuels through the use of renewable energy technologies. These eight awardees demonstrate a range of technologies – from solar panels to industrial waste heat recovery and methane sequestration – to show how Mississippi businesses and communities can diversify the way they get and use energy. Grantees from the private sector represent the agriculture, tourism, industrial sectors. Awards were also made to public entities that will use these funds for the benefits of their local communities. Combined, these awardees are expected to save or generate more than 22 million kWh annually and save almost $1 million per year in energy costs.

Through ARRA, the SEP provides $40.4 million to Mississippi for programs related to energy efficient buildings, market transformation and technology deployment and job protection through energy economic development. In Mississippi, the SEP provides assistance to both public and private entities to move the state toward greater energy efficiency, independence and sustainability while creating and preserving Mississippi jobs.
