Six Mississippi companies chosen to receive prestigious business achievement award
JACKSON, Miss. (May 22, 2009) – This week, Governor Haley Barbour named six Mississippi businesses as the district winners of the prestigious Governor's Cup, which recognizes businesses in the private sector that have made a significant impact within their communities. The winners are being recognized for their achievements during the 2008 calendar year.
"These businesses have earned this recognition because of their achievements and leadership, and I salute the contributions each is making to strengthen Mississippi's economy and improve the lives of the citizens in its community," Governor Barbour said. "They also reflect the diversity that marks Mississippi's modern economy and drives our economic development efforts."
The district winners in each category follow:
"The Governor's Cup awardees represent the business leaders across our state that are making a difference through community involvement and economic impact," said Gray Swoope, executive director of the Mississippi Development Authority (MDA). "They have demonstrated an outstanding willingness and ability to positively influence the communities around them."
The district winners in each category will receive a Governor's Cup award and their nominating entities will receive $1,000 each. From these district winners, statewide winners in each category will be selected and presented a Governor's Cup trophy along with a $5,000 Economic Development Marketing Match Grant for their respective local nominating entities. MDA along with the Mississippi Economic Development Council (MEDC), which sponsors the event, will recognize all of the district winners and announce the statewide winners at the annual MEDC awards banquet on July 23, 2009, at the Beau Rivage Resort in Biloxi, Miss.
