Energy for Transportation

Because 65% of the oil consumed annually in the United States is used for transportation, vehicle emissions have become the leading source of air pollution in the U.S. today. However, recent advances in fuels and vehicle design are helping increase fuel efficiency and reduce toxic substances discharged into the air.

Park and Ride Programs

The Energy Division's Park-and-Ride Programs are designed to:

  • Reduce congestion,
  • Conserve transportation fuel,
  • Enhance air quality,
  • Address inadequate parking
  • Provide local communities with new commuting options

The Energy Division has successfully partnered with the cities of Pascagoula, Gulfport and Bay St. Louis to develop park-and-ride programs in their areas. These communities renovated empty, desolate buildings into thriving multi-modal transportation facilities that offer passenger rail, taxi, trolley, commercial bus services and public transit services.

Challenge X Competition

Mississippi State University (MSU) and the Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems (CAVS) were recently selected as one of the recipients to participate in the Challenge X Competition. The U.S. Department of Energy and General Motors, joined by other government and industry sponsors, created the Challenge X: Crossover to Sustainable Mobility Program.

Crossover to Sustainable Mobility is a three-year engineering competition that challenges selected universities to explore vehicle solutions that minimize energy consumption while also reducing emissions. Each university team has an opportunity to participate in hands-on research and development with leading-edge automotive propulsion, fuels, materials and emission-control technologies.

In support of these activities, the Energy Division provides marketing and financial support in sponsorship of the Challenge X Competition. The Energy Division encourages the use of alternative fuels and vehicles.
