Eyes on Energy

The July 2008 website edition of Forbes ranked Mississippi among the top five states in the nation for potential biomass energy. Biomass offers significant opportunities for Mississippi’s future. The state produces or has the capability to produce sufficient feed stock for building and sustaining markets for energy, fuel, and other products. The wood products industry  – over eight million dry tons of it per year – is the principal source of biomass in the state and currently is being used to make paper, wood products, mulch, and as a fuel to generate steam and electricity. Research is ongoing to determine the most efficient use for biomass produced from municipal solid waste systems, corn grain, soybeans, poultry litter, and used grease.
