Energy Awareness Month

The U.S. Department of Energy has designated October as Energy Awareness Month. The Mississippi Development Authority's Energy Division will mark the month of October with fun, educational activities and has chosen "Powering Mississippi, Empowering Mississippians" as this year's theme. We invite you to participate in Energy Awareness Month, and encourage you to mark the following dates on your calendar.

Wednesday, October 5 — Energy Star Day
As an ENERGY STAR® partner, MDA will join the U.S. Department of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)in encouraging all Americans to take small steps that make a big difference in the fight against climate change. Change the World, Start with ENERGY STAR® is a national campaign that focuses on changes individuals can make at home, at work and in their communities with ENERGY STAR® - qualified products and energy-efficient practices that will save energy save money, and help fight climate change.
Location: Welcome Centers across the state will feature MDA Energy Awareness Month displays offering consumers the opportunity to take the ENERGY STAR® pledge.

Friday, October 7Renewable Energy Day
Learning stations set up by various state agencies and organizations will use basic physical science, biology and environmental science to educate students about energy, recycling, composting, conservation and pollution. Solar cars constructed by Mississippi high school solar car teams will be on display.

Wednesday - Friday, October 5 - 7 — Mississippi State University Biofuels Conference
This conference will cover all aspects of biofuels generation, from biomass feedstocks cultivation to biofuels production and distribution. Topics include biofuels and bio-products manufacturing, chain supply economics and environmental and energy sustainability. It will feature Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus as its guest speaker. MDA will serve as a sponsor of this event.

Audience: Students and adults interested in venturing into the biofuels and “green energy” arena with potential employers in academia, government and industry.

Sunday - Tuesday, October 16 - 18 — 2011 Southeastern Regional Association of Physical Plant Administrators (SRAPPA) Conference
MDA will participate in the 60th Annual SRAPPA Conference, “Energy Lights the Way” a three-day conference of informative presentations and networking opportunities for phyical plant administrators. The 2011 event is being hosted by Jackson State University.

Tuesday, October 18 — Stennis Space Center Energy Awareness Day
Stennis Space Center will host its 5th Annual Energy Awareness Day. The Mississippi Development Authority will continue the “Change the World, Start with ENERGY STAR” Campaign at this event.

Tuesday, October 25 — Utilizing Renewable Energy in Mississippi
Learn valuable information about how your building or facility can save energy and money. This workshop will feature speakers covering an array of renewable energy topics, such as geothermal applications, funding sources and installations for geothermal, solar energy and landfill gas. The session will address cost savings issues and ways to reduce energy costs through the use and implementation of these applications.

Friday, October 28 — Mississippi Energy Coordinators Association Seminar and State Energy Management Program Awards Ceremony
This seminar will provide training on the development and implementation of an energy management plan which will reduce energy consumption by 10 - 15% in a facility/building.
