Mississippi Regional Middle School Science Bowl

The Energy Division partners annually with the Mississippi School of Mathematics and Science to host the annual Mississippi Regional Middle School Science Bowl. This academic event encourages student involvement in math and science. Teams of students answer questions in life science, physical science, earth science, general science and mathematics. This event is a preliminary competition for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Science Bowl for Middle Schools Students.

The 2012 Mississippi Regional Middle School Science Bowl was held on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at the Mississippi School for Mathematics & Science in Columbus, MS. The winning team was Tupelo Middle School from Tupelo, MS. The winning team will compete in the National Science Bowl scheduled for April 26 – April 30, 2012, at the National 4-H Center in Washington, D.C. For more information, please visit the Middle School Science Bowl website.

Energy Smart Science Fair Awards

The Energy Smart Award identifies student projects that successfully demonstrate energy efficiency, energy conservation and the use of renewable resources such as solar, biomass or wind power. Awards are presented annually at several regional science and engineering fairs statewide.

MS-NEED Project

The Energy Division collaborates with the National Energy Education Development (NEED) Project to provide energy management activities and workshops for Mississippi's students and teachers. These energy education programs encourage critical thinking and cooperative learning and have been shown through national NEED studies to improve test scores and develop leadership skills in youth. Workshops are free, but space is limited. Contact Lisa Campbell today to find out how you can participate.

Energy Patrol Program

Can turning lights off in empty classrooms save money? It certainly can! Would your school district rather spend money on field trips and library books than utility bills? It definitely would!

The Energy Patrol Program helps a school save money and energy by implementing a few simple efficiency measures throughout the school. Reducing a school’s energy budget can increase dollars available for use elsewhere in the school. Best of all, the Energy Patrol Program is free. A great extracurricular activity and motivational tool, the Energy Patrol Program involves organized teams of students that patrol assigned areas of the school building. Students are trained to check for energy waste, like building lights left on in unoccupied areas, broken or cracked windows, or leaky faucets in bathrooms. This program is designed for students in grades three through seven. The Energy Patrol package includes a reference binder with a comprehensive teacher’s manual and exciting new videotape that brings the program to life for both teacher and student. The Energy Patrol Coordinator is available to provide hands-on assistance to help you get started. To find out how you can get this program started in your school, contact Lisa Campbell. And look for more information as we keep you updated on how you can start this new and innovative program in your school!
